What is NLP?
NLP stands for "Neuro Linguistic Programming" and this title neatly sums up what is involved...
- "Neuro" concerns our brain processes,
- "Linguistic" is concerned with our use of Language,
- "Programming" refers to our habits of repeated behaviour and Language, both of which have impact on our performance.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming began in the early 1970s when a mathematician called Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder asked themselves a simple but fascinating question: "What is it that makes the difference between somebody who is merely competent at any given skill, and somebody who excels at the same skill?"
This simple question engendered a model to understand how we as humans perceive the world, how we organise our thinking, feeling, skills and behaviour. It is a field that is continually innovating and developing.
NLP is essentially a model of excellence and achievement, or 'what works'. It is a set of guiding principles, attitudes, knowledge, skills and techniques.

Why is NLP effective?
The underlying mission of NLP has always been to unveil something about the deeper structure of being a human being and the process by which those invisible structures are transformed into the surface structures which determine how we interact with the world.
To work with NLP is to work with the deep structure of being human. NLP interventions will work on simple behaviour and capability changes, where that change is desirable because the behaviour is no longer desirable, to dealing with higher level issues involving beliefs, identity and spirituality.

What to expect at an NLP session.
Interventions using NLP are mixed with ongoing discussion to identify the extent and direction of the changes required.
NLP can be considered a talking therapy and the NLP interventions are the language form and exercises which are discussed and practiced in the session.

How will I benefit from discovering more about NLP?
NLP can be used remedially so that if you are not getting what you want out of life, it can enable you to uncover, change or transform what is holding you back.
NLP can also be used generatively to enable you to make far-reaching positive changes beyond the initial problem.
NLP offers you some of the most powerful communication skills available. Much of our success in life depends on our ability to communicate effectively - NLP will show you how.
We are often told that our brain is the most amazing computer on the planet - but nobody ever gave us an instruction manual on how to use it. NLP offers you that information, enabling you to take more control over your thoughts, feelings action and life.
NLP offers the tools to make excellence more easily attainable because if someone is achieving excellence in any field it can be modeled detailed, replicated and taught to others.
Finally, NLP offers many people a doorway to something far deeper. Once you know more about how you, as a human being work, you can use NLP to answer some truly meaningful questions, to help you more fully understand your mission in life and some of the answers to true happiness and fulfillment.

Why NLP?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of human excellence.
NLP is more than its specific techniques: it’s also a body of knowledge and a way of looking at things, an attitude. It’s based on how people actually think and behave, rather than theories about why they do what they do. So it’s grounded in reality, not speculation. And because of this, the tools that NLP offers us are grounded in reality, too: they are based on what works, so they deliver what works.
From the beginning, NLP involved action: action between people and action within people.
One of the guiding principles of NLP is that ‘reality’ is not something ‘out there’, it’s something that individual people actually, actively, personally construct in their own minds, and that it is shaped according to the way they process their experience.
The same events literally mean different things to different people. Once we learn to see our own experiences and that of other people in this way, it follows that we also know we have choices.
And NLP in action offers each and every one of us more choice – be it to have better ways of relating, start a more suitable career or just live with more joy.

Can everyone really benefit from NLP?
That is our experience.
NLP is not the preserve of experts, offering its ‘interpretations’ and ‘guidance’ from a position of superiority. One of the delights of training and working with NLP is that it offers fresh insights, and fresh approaches, however much you know and however long you have worked with it. NLP is not a professional coat you put on when you are working, but a way of understanding and behaving that is integrated into thought and action precisely because it was derived from thought and action.
That’s what makes it easy to use.
In particular, NLP shows you how to:
- Become a more effective communicator, with your partner, your children, your work colleagues and your friends.
- Understand how your mind works and how to run your mind more effectively - thereby giving you more control over how you feel and how to deal with stressful situations.
- Design your life. Knowing what you want in any area of your life and becoming clear about your goals is a fundamental life-skill shared by all effective people. NLP offers you these skills in a simple but highly effective form.
- Be able to choose how you feel rather than being the victim of events.
- Establish rapport - one of the keys to effective communication
- Deal effectively with the past by learning and moving on from events which happened long ago but which may still be holding you back.
- Become more successful in key areas in your life, by modeling your own and others’ success strategies and discovering how to duplicate them more often.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach which is used by psychologists and therapists to help promote positive change in individuals
It can help to alleviate emotional distress, and to address a myriad of psycho/social/behavioural issues. Cognitive Behavioural therapists identify and treat difficulties arising from an individual's irrational thinking, misperceptions, dysfunctional thoughts, and faulty learning.
The therapy can be conducted with individuals, families, or groups. Problems such as anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, low self esteem, adjustment difficulties, sleep disturbance, and post-traumatic stress are addressed.

During therapy, coping skills and abilities are assessed and developed and exercises set to enable further integration into your day to day behaviour by practice outside of the session.

How is the therapy conducted?
Clients are first evaluated to obtain a thorough history and background information to better understand the nature of the difficulties for which treatment is being sought.
Clients may also be asked to complete assessment tools or questionnaires.
Treatment usually takes place on a weekly basis, focusing on current issues. A treatment plan is completed to set goals and to monitor progress. The number of sessions varies with the type of difficulties being treated. Clients are expected to be active participants in their own therapy.
